LIKA - a unique collaboration for ICT in teacher education

LIKA aims at introducing digital literacy and competence in courses to strengthen actuality, relevance and quality in teacher education on a long-term basis. ICT should be an integrated and natural part in the profession of teaching.

LIKA is a six year project financed by the Swedish Knowledge Foundation, and will in the end engage approx. 600 teachers and 8 000 teacher students at four institutes, and more than 20 000 teachers in primary and secondary schools. LIKA stands for the processes of Learning, Information, Communication and Administration.

Partners:

Royal Institute of Technology (KTH)

Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH)

Royal College of Music in Stockholm (KMH)

Stockholm university (SU)

10 principles

A tough and stimulating challenge

Bringing digital literacy to in to schools is both a necessary and positive development. The integration of IT in education offers many opportunities - a more luscious and tailored education, less slang "paperwork" and more dialogue between all those involved in school work. But it can not by itself. The steering group of LIKA is well aware that it is a tough challenge. They know that the will and interest is there, they know that many teachers are already using ICT in education, but they also see that the road to a generalized use of ICT in education is not entirely unproblematic.

 - We who belong to the school management should help by creating the right conditions, otherwise nothing happens. LIKA project has formulated the 10 principles, or conditions, it may also be called, because digital literacy must find its way into classrooms. We who represent the four colleges/univerity involved with the project have of course said yes to them, and we expect that many, many more school administrations will join us during the six years that the project had on them. It is a tough but incredibly stimulating challenge. Take it!

10 principles

Three principles must be leadership and involvement of teachers subscribe to

  • Digital literacy is an important part in the teacher-training program.
  • Specific and detailed Learning outcomes of subject knowledge and skills in ICT to be integrated as much as possible
  • There must be a progression of ICT skills across the program.

Three principles about the conditions for teacher training student
  • Students will have access to the computer and support
  • Introduction to ICT in early education
  • Learning environment that supports the building of ICT.

Examination is important!

  • ICT knowledge and skills to be assessed.

Resources are important for the development of teacher competence

  • Resources / proc support / courses must be ensured for the training of teachers to develop the personal skills to integrate and teach ICT skills in "their own" course in teacher training.

Two principles relating to the evaluation and dissemination of results

  • A system for the evaluation of these principles should be integrated with the normal quality system
  • LIKA is a collaborative project. Networking and dissemination will be active.

Digital

Swedish data term group says: The importance of digital is' indicating values by using numeric expressions ". Digital belongs in the context specifically relating to how data is represented and stored.

Competence

National Encyclopedia says: competence (highly of senlat. Compete'ntia 'coincidence', 'line', the co'mpeto 'meet', 'be likely', 'competent', 'enough'), formal qualifications, training or experience required for particular service or function. "

LIKAs definition

Today students need to get digital competence, and thus have the opportunity to suffice for the future school. LIKAs definition of digital literacy is that the students, after their training, will be able to plan, implement and evaluate learning when digital tools are used.

Within LiKAproject,  a survey of knowledge should be included in the concept of 'Digital was conducted. Teacher and students responded recently on what digital competece is for them. The following competencies were identified:

Technical competence

Digital technology competence means that the teacher can decide which digital tools are suitable for use in an educational context. The teacher has the technical competence to ensure continuous updating of these tools.

Didactic competence

Digital didactic competence is to be able to determine when, why and how ICT is used as educational and methodical support of learning. The teacher should be able to choose work and digital tools that fit the content and examination best. Here, the educational relevance of various digital tools to be added.

Theoretical competece

Digital theoretical competence means that the teacher has knowledge of ICT educational theories and methods of learning, and can apply them in practice in the teaching professional activities. The teacher should also be aware of current research in the field of ICT.

In the LIKA project, we see competence as a dynamic combination of knowledge, understanding, abilities, skills, assessment and approach. This combination is shaped in learning activities, which can be divided into topic-specific and generic skills. Digital competence needs to be developed based on both the substansive educational perspective and a more general perspective. In the LIKA project, we have worked out different materials to help implement various competences in programs and courses.

Then, as each institution is planning which elements fit in their respective educational scientific institution, one can also envision a progression within each program. The students will, after their training, be able to plan, implement and evaluate learning when digital tools are used.
